Tomorrow the entire world will celebrate International Women’s Day and though a single day is not enough to celebrate Womanhood but a little more attention and love never hurts anyone.
Trying to encompass the greatness of Womanhood in mere words is a futile effort. Like its counterparts in Hollywood who have came up with campaigns like ‘Me Too’ and ‘Time’s Up’ our Bollywood actresses too are trying to break away from the shackles of male dominated society in their own bold and upfront ways.
Today our actresses are not shying away from getting married when they are at peak of their career in fact they are continuing to work even post marriage. Previously this was not the case as getting married when you are at top of your game was equivalent of committing professional hara-kiri.
From the past few years several B-town actresses are uninhibitedly writing their own rules, whether on-screen or off-screen. And it’s a refreshing change to witness how these beauties with brain are redefining feminism.
Bringing you five feisty actresses of B-town who are the flag-bearer of several much needed changes that our industry and society has witnessed in the last few years.
Kareena Kapoor Khan:
Throughout her pregnancy Kareena never shied away from endorsing products, making public appearance or attending events thereby breaking the norms which pregnant women are generally expected to follow. This was something which we hadn’t seen other actresses doing before.
Back in 2016 when speculations regarding her pregnancy started doing the rounds Kareena lashed out at media for treating her pregnancy news as if it was a casualty. She openly said, “I'm pregnant, not a corpse. And what maternity break? It's the most normal thing on earth to produce a child. It is high time the media back off, and stop treating me any different than I ever was. Anybody who is bothered shouldn't work with me… but my work goes on as is, like always. Stop making it a national casualty.”
She further said, “We are in 2016, not in the 1800s. Probably, even at that time, people were way more civilized and normal than the way the media is behaving and speculating now. I'm just fed-up of people making it (pregnancy) to be a death of some sort. In fact, it should be a message to a lot of people that marriage or having a family has absolutely nothing to do with my career.”
This attitude of Kareena helped people in understanding the fact that pregnancy (especially for an actress) is not end of the world. Kareena also made people realize that having a kid is the most natural thing to do and actresses too can have the luxury of having a family as well as a successful career.
Post marriage Vidya gained some weight and that was enough for people to start speculating that she will no longer be offered meaty or substantial roles but the actress proved everyone wrong and went on to take up offers. Post marriage majority of her films failed to create any magic at the box office but last year’s TUMHARI SULU restored everyone’s faith in her as a power-house performer.
In TUMHARI SULU she played a role of a house wife who takes up a job of radio jockey for a late-night show which gives advice on relationships. The role won her praises from audience as well as the critics.
Off screen as well Vidya continued to speak her mind wherever she felt it was needed. When the entire industry was reluctant to take sides in the Kangana-Hrithik spat, Vidya never tried to dodge away questions regarding her opinion on this spat. Talking on the feud Vidya had said, “I really think it is none of my business to be judging anyone but I have the greatest admiration for Kangana because she is standing up for herself. I think that is very creditable because as women we find it very easy to stand up for other people, our family members, children, husbands, parents but we rarely stand up for ourselves. She (Kangana) is standing up for herself, so kudos to her and more power to her for that."
We are not trying to establish who was right or wrong in this feud all we are saying that in an industry where being diplomatic and politically correct is what people strive for, Vidya never hesitates from giving an honest opinion.
Queen Kangana became a sensation post her brutally honest interviews on her alleged relationship with Hrithik Roshan to the media. Like Vidya said, Kangana stood up for herself when no one else came forward to support or help her.
Despite the mounting pressures from the industry to take back her word or face the dire consequences Kangana refused to be tamed and bog down in front of others. She blatantly said that she doesn’t care if her career comes to an end now and she will continue to stand by her words.
She was the one who stirred the debate on nepotism and touched upon several right points by penning down open letters and speaking her mind fearlessly. She is certainly inspiring all girls out there to embrace their flaws and stand up for themselves.
Desi girl Priyanka Chopra is spreading her wings across the globe and making her presence felt wherever she is going. From making her Hollywood debut to doing a substantial role in American television series PeeCee is charming everyone with her talent.
She is also one of those women who believes in standing for her fellow women. Time and again she has stood up for her friend Meghan Markle as post her engagement announcement to Prince Harry people have reduced her to being just that thereby forgetting that she has her own identity.
Priyanka is making the right noise in all the departments be it in supporting Humanitarian causes or fighting for gender equality. Actresses like PeeCee are really paving the way for other girls to follow the suit.
Bhumi might be just three films old but the kind of film she is associating herself with she is definitely on her way to carve a niche for herself. For her debut film DUM LAGA KE HAISHA she gained 30 kilos! For an industry obsessed with size zero and sexy figure this was a bold move which paid off handsomely as the film went on to become a success and even bagged a National Award.
In her second film TOILET: EK PREM KATHA she went on to fight for a woman’s basic right to have a toilet in her house.. Akshay Kumar her co-star in the film praised her for taking up this role which many other actresses would have refused since the film required her to shoot for a scene where she is answering nature’s call in a farm!
Her third film SHUBH MANGAL SAAVDHAN spoke about yet another taboo topic of Erectile Dysfunction which we as a society prefer brushing under the carpet rather than discussing it. It is said that you needn’t speak for yourself your work does that for you and in Bhumi’s case her work is definitely helping us to understand her better. Kudos to you girl!
