Renowned lyricist and poet, Padma Bhushan Gopal Das Saxena ‘Neeraj’, popularly known as Kavi Neeraj has penned countless gems and is remembered for super hits like ‘Karvaan Guzar Gaya, Ghubaar Dekhte Rahe’. But what many will not remember is that, Neeraj had essayed an important role in giving Shashi Kapoor, the eternal lover boy image as some of his most popular romantic songs from films like KANYADAN (‘Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe’, ‘Meri Zindagi Mein Aate’), SHARMILEE (‘Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaye Re’, ‘Khilte Hain Gul Yahan’) etc were penned by him.
When we caught up with the living legend, Neeraj expressed his extreme grief at the death of romantic legend, Shashi Kapoor, and shared with us his pleasant memories. He told us that even though his association with Shashi dates back to his father, Prithiviraj Kapoor’s days (Kanpur -1949) but it was only later that he met Shashi to compose for his films.
Neeraj ji related that he had gone to meet late Shashi Kapoor on his Standard Herald car ( MRZ 2218), while composing songs for KANYADAN and Shashi loved the open top car so much that he used it to picturize the super hit, ‘Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe’, in that car, along with a few other scenes as well. Actress Asha Parekh too was present there.
Here’s hoping that Shashi Kapoor is smiling up there as he reads this!
